For more information on United Way's help guide, use this link: http://www.unitedwaypittsburgh.org/uwac Abuse/shelters Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh Emergency shelter for victims of intimate partner violence and their children, 24-hour hotline, information and referral, individual crisis counseling, support groups, legal options counseling, and help through legal processes, medical advocacy. Literature, newsletter, speakers, and training/consultation available on intimate partner and dating violence. Also provides school-based violence prevention and intervention programs, for grades pre-K through 12, Hands are Not for Hurting, an early intervention program with the goal of reaching children before they become victims or perpetrators; and children's counseling service.
East Side Community Collaborative Emergency Shelter An emergency shelter (up to 30 days) for homeless individual women and women with children, ages birth to 12. Women with drug and alcohol issues must be willing to attend an outpatient program and are subject to random drug/alcohol screenings. Women with domestic violence issues must be willing to attend counseling. Women with dual diagnosis issues must be enrolled in an outpatient mental health and drug/alcohol program, and must consistently take medications. All residents must obey the rules and must work toward permanent living and self-sufficiency. Boys and Girls Clubs of W. PA Wilkinsburg Branch Counseling, referrals, educational guidance, work training, tutoring, vocational guidance, and youth employment to help youngsters plan and set goals, lead members into resolving problems, and provide opportunities to develop basic skills for education and work. Trips, dramatics, arts, cooking, sewing, reading, journalism, scholarships, baking, and more encourage youngsters to broaden their horizons, help them to understand inter-group relations, and to enjoy and participate in cultural activities. Seasonal sports, team sports, and health education. Group clubs, special interest groups, community services, keystone clubs and junior leaders involve members in the leadership process, make them aware of their heritage and civic responsibility, and provide opportunities to plan and make decisions on their own. Child Care Partnerships Child Care Partnerships (CCP) covers a wide range of services as a comprehensive Child Resource and Referral Agency. The largest CCP Program, Child Care Information Services (CCIS) of Allegheny County, manages client eligibility and reimbursement to providers for subsidized child care for low income families. The CCIS program also maintains an extensive database on all regulated day care facilities in the county. Staff assist parents in selecting care that best meets the needs of the family. Information is provided to parents on how to choose quality child care and what questions to ask of potential providers. CCP works with employers on developing programs that assist their employees in their child care search. They will also send out information to those interested in opening a childcare center, family day care home or group day care. Addison Behavioral Care, Inc. (ABC) Outpatient Drug/Alcohol Treatment Outpatient and intensive outpatient drug and alcohol assessment, education, and treatment for youth and adults with alcohol and other abuse and addiction problems. Treatment is culturally sensitive and utilizes strategies that address the individual, his/her family, social support group and peers. Personal and interpersonal growth skills. Ark Ministry Food pantry. Provides food baskets, twice a month for single people and families in need.
Covenant Church of Pittsburgh This is an on-site feeding program that offers support to single parents with children ages 5-11 years.
East Hills Community Christian Church Food Pantry Food Pantry for East Hills, Homewood, and Wilkinsburg. Maternal and Child Health Program The Maternal and Child Health Program provides a spectrum of direct services, information and referral services designed to promote the health of pregnant women and families with children. In partnership with other organizations, we offer primary health care in Turtle Creek, South Side, Wilkinsburg, Lawrenceville and Garfield. These partnerships utilize sliding-fee scales which make care affordable for the uninsured and underinsured. They also help families apply for existing health insurance programs. Family Self-Sufficiency Program Helps very low-income, single parent families in Allegheny County to secure and maintain decent, affordable housing and higher levels of self-sufficiency. A counselor helps program participants to develop and implement action plans which contain specific goals and objectives for self-sufficiency and the steps which participants need to take to achieve these goals. The case manager works on an individual basis with each participant, linking them to key services, monitoring their progress, and guiding them on their personally designed paths toward self-sufficiency. Decent, affordable housing is provided to all participants by the Allegheny County Housing Authority through the HUD Section 8 Rental Assistance Program.
Habitat for Humanity Pittsburgh Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with volunteers and low-income families in need, to build homes, which are then purchased by these families through no-profit, no-interest mortgages.
